Cello Lessons

My Experience as a Cellist

That's me at age 5, playing on my first cello at the Annual Suzuki Play-In at Stanford University. I have now been playing for 25 years and find great joy in sharing my knowledge of this incredible instrument.

As a youth, my cello granted me some of the most memorable experiences of my life. I performed with youth symphonies and chamber groups all over the world, in cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Paris, Amsterdam, and Taipei. In college, I was principal cellist of the University Symphony at U.C. Berkeley, and frequently performed in the Bay Area with my piano quartet, Quartetto del Pranzo. In 1999, I was awarded the Eisner Prize for Creative Arts in Music Performance, as well as the Hertz Travel Fellowship, which allowed me to study the cello in Lausanne, Switzerland for one year after graduation. Upon my return to the United States, I continued to play and perform in New York City, Quebec City, the San Francisco Bay Area, and most recently, Seattle.

I have been teaching the cello for over 10 years and strive to make my lessons fun and engaging for young children by incorporating games and movement activities, while emphasizing the importance of learning good technique and music theory. My curriculum of choice is the Suzuki Method for Cello.

Testimonial from a happy parent:

"La Verne’s gifts for teaching are inspiring. She connects with her students as human beings and as musicians. Her love for the instrument is infectious. My daughter was so inspired that she could hardly stop practicing—she’d keep asking when her next lesson was. La Verne’s kind, generous spirit brought my daughter into playing the cello and we are so grateful for the experience."  -Francis, mother of a 13 year old student.
